On the set of X-MEN: Days of Future Past with James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Hugh Jackman
Frank may be a shitty father, but the four things he did for Ian that I will always be thankful for:
- When he saw Ian and Mickey having sex, he smiled and didn’t make a big deal out of it. He treated the situation no differently than if he had seen Lip having sex. That Gallagher mojo.
- When Ian freaked out, Frank told Ian that men having sex with men was natural and had been happening since the beginnings of civilization. He even rattled off a few famous men who slept with men.
- Throughout all of his, Frank never assumed Ian was gay, or straight, or anything. Sexuality is fluid, and not a big deal. Ian never said he was gay, so Frank didn’t label Ian (and later, when Terry says Ian got Mandy pregnant, Frank assumes it to be true).
- Most importantly, Frank ended the conversation calling Ian his son, even though Frank knew 100% at this point that Ian wasn’t his.
Frank also told Monica about Mickey when she returned home. It sounds like when Frank was filling her in about the kids, he casually mentioned that Ian had a boyfriend, just like Fiona had Steve. No big deal. And Monica, instead of saying to Ian “Why were you sleeping with Mickey Milkovich?" says instead "I’m sorry that you’re hurting, baby".
This is especially interesting when you consider that the Gallaghers mention multiple times that being gay in the South Side is dangerous, yet both Monica and Frank, who grew up in the South Side, still treat it as normal and natural. They may be fucked up parents, but I’d like to think their acceptance - along with Lip’s and Fiona’s - really helped Ian at this point, and allowed him to fall in love with Mickey and be honest about that love.
